Review of Out for Justice (1991) by Terry C — 07 Mar 2009

Nothing silly to say about this one; some cunt kills our boy's buddy, so the Big Man heads OUT. FOR JUSTICE. Glasses smash, arms break, balls get kicked, and one guy even has his face pissed on by a puppy.

Okay, so I guess I lied, there's plenty of silliness. Not least of which being Seagal's attempt here to really earn himself that Oscar by adopting an Italian accent and treating us, the eager viewers, to a number of intense, emotional monologues all about this dude Gino Felino (who it turns out is none other than Steven Seagal!).

There's a pretty great villain in this one. He's no Screwface, but that's what's great about him. Richie hasn't got a plan; he's just a dick. He is eventually given the shadow of a motive, but it doesn't matter, mostly he's just an unhinged psycho-prick getting off on having one last wild and violent night. Obviously, innocent people die, so when big Gino finally catches up with him you know he's going to sort this fuck-face out and that satisfaction should be guranteed. And it is.

I guess that's it for the Seagal 'Golden Era'. On reflection, through his gritty, violent (and, whisper it, very silly) films, I have quite enjoyed getting to know Mr. Seagal and his early on-screen persona. He seems like a pretty cool guy with a lot (of entertaining and cheesy action hijinx) to offer the world, and he is also good at breaking arms, so even if I didn't think much of him I still wouldn't want to risk pissing him off.
