Review of Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) by Rick W — 23 Oct 2016
Original of Evil was a pleasant surprise in almost every way. Not only did it succeed in being well-made, interesting, and emotionally investing, it managed to be downright unnerving.
That was one of the things this movie did best; it created a sense of serious gloom and uneasiness all throughout and constantly kept me nervous. Many of the scares were done in ways that are familiar, but still managed to be shockingly frightening and intense.
Performances were rather great as well, with the little girl, Doris, doing an especially impressive job at being intimidating and creepy.
My only gripes with this movie are the terribly cheesy CGI moments and a bit of awkwardly dull acting towards the end (especially from the mom character).
I seriously did not like the first Ouija movie, so for me to say that Origin of Evil totally blew the first one out of the water means a lot. If this is the direction the series will head in, it could find itself alongside other great, modern horror series such as The Conjuring and Insidious.
