Every successful movies, today, seems to return for the second time, whether sequels, reboots, or spin-offs, and in this case, a prequel. "Ouija: Origin of Evil" comes from Mike Flanagan, director of "Oculus" and tells the story of the events, five decades, before its predecessor "Ouija." It takes place in 1967 Los Angeles, and follows a widowed psychic (Reaser) who must confront the evil spirits in her home after her youngest daughter (Wilson) gets overtaken by a tormented soul through an Ouija board.

Flanagan slowly yet masterfully builds tension with a great amount of silence - he utilizes elements to quietly intensify the film's spooky atmosphere. His directing style is done with rich meticulousness whether crafting effective jump-scares or creating a retro vibe by using throwback graphics and old-fashioned credits, such as the old spinning-globe of the Universal Pictures.

In terms of casting decisions, Wilson is truly the highlight of the film - she can be both innocent and horrifying. But unlike many, Ouija: Origin of Evil heavily relies on its characters, and not on common horror tropes. It's pervaded by nuanced characterizations and emotional complexity, so when the tragic third act comes, it comes with a treat.

VERDICT: Ouija: Origin of Evil may not be a born-classic horror film, but it's a gazillion times better than its predecessor. Plus, it's is a proof that Flanagan is a new voice to hear out in the horror genre.
