Review of Other People (2016) by Mary H — 05 Oct 2016
My family is in this sitch right now, me as a mom w/incurable cancer and my son, slightly younger, a college student. This hits all the highs and lows of what cancer does to a family, partic from the mother-son bond angle.
It also includes dealing w/his orientation w/a nonsupportive parent/father. This is real. Life doesnt stop bc someome gets ill, and there is no magic dust that everyone suddenly gets along etc. However, you can tell this is written by a comedy writer bc thankfully it deals with the ups and downs involved w/more emphasis on the ups and erstwhile humor the situation can bring (dating, extended family etc.
). I have had the exact same convos w/my fam about burial and similar amusing (medical) pot discussions. Thank you Mr Kelley for this real look at what it's like. It is both amusing and affecting. And he hits it on the head: we just want our kids to be ok and to not forget us.
With this movie, he proves he's ok and it will serve as an endless memorial tribute to his mom, as well as a guiding light to other families, a legacy to her as a teacher. Remember, we are still with you when we are gone, just look in the mirror! We made you, you are us! You can even hear us if you close your eyes and listen.
We taught you everything, just remember, WWMD/WWMS, What would mom do? What would mom say? We may not be here forever to do/say in person, but you can imagine how proud we'd be, what we would say etc.
Hold onto that. We want you to remember always! We are with you always! Outstanding performances by all.
