Review of Other People (2016) by Ken S — 25 Dec 2016
'Other People' isn't about the swinging lifestyle, but rather is a poignant look at the all too often mishandled on film final months of someone dying of cancer. This isn't for the weak, but it's an authentic portrait into the hearts and souls of our characters. Jesse Plemons continues to amaze as he plays against type as the often conflicted and close to a mental breakdown young gay adult. Molly Shannon finally has a role she can sink her teeth into. Chris Kelly the head writer for SNL writes and directs in a simple way. This is delicate and he treats it as such. The supporting players are a delight including a fun few scenes from the always wonderful June Squibb.
Watch with tissues handy as if you get to the finish there is a fantastic end scene. What a wonderful song (that most people can't stand) ties us all together in a bow. There are some laughs here so it's not all doom and gloom. Last year we had 'James White' this year we get another that raises the bar to the oft overplayed cancer movie.
