Review of Orlando (2007) by Cary C — 22 Sep 2007
If you haven't seen this artful movie, based on the novel by Virginia Woolf, then you need to catch up fast. It works on so many levels. Orlando is a young man who catches the elderly Queen Elizabeth's eyes.
She promises him an estate on one condition . . . that he never grow old. Hence begins a journey divided into several historical periods and themes (i.e. sex, love . . .) and which even has Orlando changing sex during an abnormally long sleep.
It is a reflection on life and sexuality from all angles, through the eyes of one bewitching character. The soundtrack is mesmerising and perfectly suits each time period and mood. The photography . .
. well . . . it is perfection. This is one of the best 'arthouse' movies EVER and remains Sally Potter's finest work so far, thanks to magnificent settings, a fine central performance from Tilda Swinton and also the rather tasty Billy Zane - who at the time was so stunning that he even had a 'straight' friend of mine lusting after him!
