Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Jarett B — 20 Jun 2011
Before I begin, I STILL think that "Raging Bull" deserved the Oscar, and there is no changing my mind. Ever.
Ordinary People is a good film... it's just not even close to being on par with Raging Bull. Emotionally? Nope, still not even close. Not to sound like an ass, but the whole family dynamic in the film is kind of cliche (not that I didn't feel bad). The height of the film comes with Hutton's realization (no spoilers sorry) and, of course, any scene with Sutherland.
The cast is great, for sure. Mary Tyler Moore is stone cold and, really, evil in a maternal way. She looms large over the entire film, like Godzilla or something. Top tier performance to be sure. Of course, Sutherland rocks the boat. I wish that the film focused more on the relationship between Hutton and Hirsch, however, as their bond is quite intimate (and funny at times).
I feel that the film really boils down to one line, though. It's a hell of a line, but it's still just one line.
