Review of Orca (1977) by Elliott K — 12 Jul 2008
In this underpraised response to Jaws, Flipper, and Moby Dick, the killer whale is neither man-eating machine nor pet, but a competent adversary on a quest for justice (and he gets it). This film reminds us that before Shamu, the killer whale was as feared by mariners as the great white.
The baloney science, implausible disasters, and transparent themes are troubling, but this film dares to ask the question, "Can you commit a sin against an animal?" (A: "Sins are really against one's self.
") Richard Harris (the original Dumbledore...) and the incomparable but badly dubbed Charlotte Rampling star with Bo Derek and some killer killer whales.
