Review of Orca (1977) by Charlie M — 23 Oct 2014
Probably seen as a Jaws ripoff, and while it was likely made only because of the success of Jaws, it really isn't too bad compared to other killer animal movies that were coming out around this time.
The cast is really good. In fact, the acting may be too good for a movie like this. This movie takes itself very serious, and with the strong acting and decent story you would expect something a bit better. Unfortunately, this movie is kind of cheap. Obviously it wasn't made with that big of a budget with all the stock footage and cheap-looking effects, but that's why the acting and screenplay were too good for this type of material. It seems like a Moby Dick kind of epic that should have been about 2 and half hours with bigger set pieces, but instead it's only 90s minutes and you can feel the low budget of the movie.
It's okay. I would have preferred something that didn't take itself so serious or something that had higher production value. As it stands it's merely a forgotten 70s man vs. nature movie that isn't worth going out of your way to watch, but could have been much worse.
