Review of Opera (1987) by Stef I — 27 Dec 2010
This grossly underrated masterpiece is probably my favourite movie of all time. Every frame is perfect, from the very second that it begins, with that close up of the Raven's eye flickering about, right to the closing credits. The camera angles are incredible: first person perspectives, aerial panning, pullback shots... fuck, it's ridiculous. The death scenes are beautiful. The soundtrack is amazing. This is, in my opinion, the best Giallo ever made, hands down. This movie is overflowing with details and I sincerely believe that it takes at least two viewings to really absorb it all. If you've only seen it once and didn't love it you must do yourself a favour and give it another go.
Spoiler alert!
I always hear complaints about the Alps ending, but that is honestly my favourite part.
"He's alive! He's here! Run! For God's sake run!!".
Holy shit!
I'm also very fond of the Killer's reveal, it breaks my heart every time.
"All I wanted was your love".
His perception of love is so corrupted beyond repair that he wont ever be able to give or receive it. The whole situation is hopelessly sad and awesome as hell. Opera fucking rules. Urbano Barberini is a babe to the extreme.
