Review of Opera (1987) by Phil N — 15 Sep 2011
One of the first Argento films I ever saw, and probably the last great film he made, Opera has a sadistic maniac stalking the lead in a production of Verdiâ(TM)s Macbeth. Whilst the film lacks one of Argentoâ(TM)s great scores, and the story is just functional, itâ(TM)s nonetheless a visual tour de force as the director utilises loads of POV shots to heighten the voyeuristic theme of the film.
It also features some of his best set pieces, the iconic needles stuck to the eyelids and gunshot through the eye hole being two of the most memorable in any Argento film to date. Shame he lost his way thereafter.
