Go ahead and bash Costner all ya want, he knows westerns. Not only is this superbly directed but he makes some great acting choices here. One of which is to step back and let Duvall do what he does best.
I have no idea why he wasn't nominated. He leads a great cast that work with a smart script. The shootouts feel jarringly real and it's just a beautifully shot film. Recommended to all who love westerns! And rest in peace, Michael Jeters!
