Review of Open House (2010) by Robert H — 21 Jul 2012
SPOILER ALERT - For those of you wanting to watch this movie for Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer... they don't last more than the first 10 minutes and are in the film for but a few short moments.
That aside, the performances of Tricia Helfer, and Brian Geraghty are extremely good. I was also pleased to see Rachel Blanchard in another film. I don't tend to see a lot of her work.
As a thriller this film tends to lack the suspense and tension usually associated with the genre and instead fills the void with more gore than you'd normally see in this type of film.
The film doesn't waste any time getting to the killing either. It almost has more of a serial killer vibe than a thriller and yet, it still managed to keep many tropes of the thriller genre.
The film plays out as a mix of Natural Born Killers meets The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (without babies) meets Captivity meets any number of thrillers meets Last House on the Left... ok it's very similar to a lot of films and mixes them all together.
Without the gore and great performances from Helfer and Geraghty Open House fails on every account but thankfully it has enough going for it to warrant at least one viewing... if you have nothing better to do or watch.
