Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Robert H — 28 Aug 2017
BOOO! BOO RIDLEY SCOTT! BOOO! You've lost any semblance of credibility you once had! What happened to building your story with suspense, care and likeable characters? Why is everyone a fucking idiot? Why do I even bother hoping anymore? This could have been your chance to set the wayward franchise back on a more noble path. To say something meaningful. To be profound. To at least follow clear threads of narrative that leave people both satisfied and with questions that aren't just "what the fuck happened there?", "which generic character just died?" or "when will it end?". The answer to which is always, without fail, after the obligatory scene involving the xenomorph you thought you'd escaped hanging onto your space ship and giving you one last needless spot of trouble. Enough. It's been done over and over IN THIS VERY FRANCHISE! Please, dear lord, come up with something new. Something fresh. There is so much potential in this universe that has been squandered in favour of appeasing the same horror formula that's been used time and again. The audience is bored of it and longs to be challenged.
The only redeeming feature, as always, was Michael Fassender who carries the film.
