Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Clayton D — 28 Oct 2013
Its as if Old Boy and any David Lynch film had a threesome with Lars Von Trier....and 9 months later this film popped out. This is either a recipe for shit, or for cinematic excellence....depending upon perspective.
Each shot was overly drawn out....creating tension, yes, but also felt as if it was attempting to create more interest out of its players by simply leaving the camera on them for longer then nessecary.
It got so bad hat I was watching the film at 1.5x and it still felt slow. Some of the shots were straight out of a graphic novel....the lighting was gorgeous, and the shots of Bankok made me yearn for that place.
...the violence was over the top and gruesome....There were parts of the film I liked...but just like Drive, I felt like the director was so in love with Goslings pretty face, that he forgot to film the rest of the movie.
If you have done psychedelics, this film may speak to you...how ever I have, and its words still fell on deaf ears.
