Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Mark L — 12 Nov 2013
*BLU-RAY REVIEW*.
Most will call this boring. Some will call this pointless. Others will call this down right stupid. And every single one of them has a right to.
There is symbolism here. Rather than riddle you with poetic words and structure, this is played out visually. After seeing 'Drive', I was convinced that Refn was one of the closest things to a new Kubrick. But after this, i'm convinced that he's more or less another Terrance Malick. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily.
Let me start off by saying that I understood everything that was going on. If you were left lost or dazed by the hypnotic cinematography, I would be more than happy to explain everything that was taking place. But.......I will still describe a movie to you that isn't that glorious.
While I still think this is a GOOD movie, it is by no means a great one. I applaud Refn's boldness with his ability to be different and trudge where only few filmmakers dream. But that still doesn't make this an awesome film.
The reason I'm slightly defending this picture is because I know it will receive a barrage of negative criticism. But there are things to behold here. I don't know. I try to keep these things short, but this movie is one of those pieces that requires a 'face to face' convo in order to fully describe it. So if you've seen it, and you run into me in public, we'll grab a coffee and discuss it. My rating, 3 out of 5 stars.
