Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Jay S — 06 Nov 2017
Watching this movie again and again will help I think anyone with this experience. It's very strange and highly metaphorical and maybe sometimes even unnecessarily subtle. But, for me at least, there's something very special about the ambition of the structure and vision of such a strange metaphorical narrative that actually mostly works.
It's a visual experience. The complete opposite of a Tarantino dialogue driven film. While I do think some scenes were edited out of place making some meaning hard to comprehend, some violence became a little much, and a few small character moments that I think could've rounded out the film's meaning, it's actually very impressive to me how much of this movie was clear based on very well framed visuals and great use of a euphoric soundtrack.
And hey, if you don't appreciate the film's narrative structure, I think anyone can at least appreciate some of the best colored and framed cinematography of the past few years.
