Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Ankur B — 28 Apr 2014
Director Nicolas Winding Refn explores the themes of the devil and god with the composure you would come to expect from the visionary director, but his characters feel empty and there is nothing beneath the surface to compliment the sublime visuals and his signature directory style.
His fetish for extreme violence becomes rather excessive in certain scenes as well. The film is filled with brilliant metaphors and subtle messages and Cliff Martinez conjures up another superb soundtrack.
The art community is very split about this cinema. For me, it's an incendiary masterpiece which contains flaws that Refn has failed to forsee.
