Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Anders A — 23 Aug 2015
Several factors are playing big roles here even before the movie starts. Refn and Goslings super success with their previous movie Drive, are back with another transcendental movie. Cliff Martinez is also once again pulling the soundtrack strings.
From the corrupt L.A. the plot has been put to the world capital of sex, violence and drugs: Bangkok. Refn is all about style and strong visual contrast, in this piece heavily inspired by Dario Argento.
The color of red are used without any shame, energizing the atmosphere of violence and tension. Gosling is super laidback, cool and slightly retarded (aswell as in Drive), his mother played by Kirsten Scott Thomas as his super hot and angry MILF.
Its slowpaced and tensional, like a sublte transcendental glimpse of Twin Peaks thanks to the tunes of Cliff Martinez. Refn is extreme, kind of similar to his countryman Von Trier, though Refn speak through violence, Von Trier uses deeper psyche as his force of expression.
