Review of One Missed Call (2003) by Raphael V — 11 Aug 2007
It sounds too good to be true. A horror movie with a then legitimately scary premise (you get a phone call from yourself on your cell, during your upcoming and inevitable demise), directed by great "shock" director, Miike. Well, in a sense, it kind of is.
With several twists and turns, the story keeps you guessing, right up to the ending (which will either annoy you to no end or make you incredibly pleased for investing two hours in the movie). Scares are minimal initially but when they ramp up, they really get the job done. The stupid ringtone itself is scary, and once you hear it, you'll definitely agree.
A great movie, a great plot, and some great scares. The problems come in with the ending and with the Miike name. If you are expecting heads to go flying and crazy random things showing up for no reason other than to be random, you will be disappointed.
