Review of One Hour with You (1932) by Levon P — 12 Jul 2008
Effortlessly crafted, this film really highlights what became referred to as "The Lubitsch Touch" - a nudge nudge, wink wink approach to sex in early films. Maurice Chevalier is masterful in making what would be a very unsympathetic adulterer a truly compelling and likeable character.
This is a genuinely funny film, from start to finish, and a very interesting look at the early experiments in the musical genre of film. What is also interesting is Lubitsch's use of breaking the fourth wall in order to dance around the unspeakable topic of sex.
Amazingly, only a few years after the release of this film, it was banned under the Hayes Code until the 1960s.
