Review of One Hour Photo (2002) by Irina T — 14 Nov 2011
Whoa I didn't expect this movie to be so emotional and intense especially at the end when we find out why he has been doing the stalking. I think it's somewhat similar to The Lives of Others (Das Leben den Anderen) except for the fact that the guy in that movie is not a stalker. However, the concept of a lonely single man stalking the lives of others (who are happy and married) is the same. I really love the direction of the movie, how it is so damn focused on Sy's life and how he feels about the family he's stalking.
What makes it intriguing is that Sy is not a stalker just because he has some mental illness, but because there's some underlying meaning behind it, and it is very powerful. It is understandalbe why he even does it in the first place, because of the dark secret he knows from the photos.
This is an awesome pyschological thriller. It's not THAT intense, that's for sure, but it's still directed very well. The script is also very powerful. I love it.
8/10.
