Review of Ondine (2010) by Cem "Regi" "Pixelmannen" . — 01 Jun 2011
This movie spares no time "getting the ball rolling" so to speak, as it jumps straight into the story. Not a lot of background information is given as the movie begins, but with the proper amount of common sense one should be able to make out that Syracuse played by Colin Farrell is a fisherman who manages to catch a beautiful young lady named Ondine played by Alicja Bachleda in his net. Colin Farrell's performance was quite good I must say and made the movie far better then it really is. He played the role of a very distressed and skiddish recovering alcoholic who has an undying love for his daughter played by Alison Barry, who on the other hand somewhat ruined the movie for me with the way she executed her lines in such and aggresively loud tone, it was hard to watch. Alas, I must give her the benefit of the doubt on her dialogue as it wasn't very well written for any of the characters in the story, and at parts it was hard to understand without the volume up or subtitles on due to poor delivery and annunciation.
The story itself is suppose to give off that "magical" feeling because it's suppose to be a fairytale of sorts. However, this warm fuzzy feeling ends when you discover that Ondine is not the lovable fairytale creature from the sea she is made out to be, but a romanian drug mule who washed into Syracuse net on chance. The plot was very flawed and misleading. Ending on a bad note in my opinion, as the climax that was hardly molding itself through the entire movie skyrockets and falls in about 4 minutes or so.
