Review of Once (2007) by Pratyay B — 06 Oct 2010
"Once" is another one of those indie romantic films where two drifting souls find each other through random circumstance and see something that they've been missing their whole lives.
"Once" doesn't have an original plot, but it certainly makes up for it through every other element that composes this tale of a guy and a girl.
Delicate direction, editing, and performances by musicians Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, making their acting debuts, contribute to the sort of serene beauty of this indie musical exudes. Everything about the film feels organic, from the way the relationship begins to the film's use of its incredible soundtrack.
"Once" is unlike any other musical you've ever seen -- or, at least, that I've seen. Where most others aim to please audiences through elaborate musical numbers and soaring vocals, "Once" is content in its quiet and intimate little niche and is all the better for it.
