Review of Once (2007) by Phoebem. — 22 Oct 2007
This movie could have been the most maudlin, saccharine, melodramatic and sexed-up movie of the year. Instead, it is the most beautiful. Partly because of the transcendent musical collaboration between Hansard and Irglova, but also the simple and elegant (yet seemingly low-fi) directing of John Carney.
Hollywood could never make this movie in its wildest dreams. I'm so happy that a small indie movie like this became the grassroots phenomenon that it is now. Give Carney, Hansard, and Irglova awards, fetes and money and let them keep doing what they're doing: adding beauty to the world and proving to the Hollywood bigwigs that viewers DON'T want to see the next pastiche of fantasy, special effects and silicone tits.
I hope more movies can be made like this soon - but if not, I'm happy to sit cross-legged in front of my TV and watch Once again for the twentieth time.
