Review of On the Waterfront (1954) by Nathan F — 25 Mar 2009
On The Waterfront stars, oh what's his name, that Brando fellow--who, far and away, carries the picture on his back and has Elia Kazan thank him kindly for it. It's a fairly standard morality play, but the commanding leads from Brando (arguably our greatest performer), Cobb and Malden keep it exciting.
For the film's final act, Kazan has a tendency to overplay the hero card--especially considering the whole HUAC-subtext going on here, which, if you want to enjoy what you see, the less you know about the better--but hard to fight against the natural charisma of Marlon.
That boy's a contender.
