Review of On the Waterfront (1954) by Shae S — 11 Jul 2010
Probably Brando's best prime performance. Here he plays a troubled thug working with the Mob in the slums of New York. he knows secrets that can get his life back together, and end it at the same time.
This film had a powerful meaning and delivered it in such a way as to speak to us personally. It really let's you understand the struggles poor people at the docks go through, and the corruption of the Union bosses.
What I loved about this movie was the sense of dignity and independence in the character Brando portrays. He has a complete transformation from the start of the movie, up to the powerful end. Other great performances made this movie what it is and carried it along.
The story was genuine and original, and the directing was flawless. Hugely contemporary for it's time...an Oscar WELL deserved.
