Review of On the Beach (1959) by Dickie L — 09 May 2010
There weren't too many post apocalyptic films made as early as 1959, and this film holds an especially eerie air to anyone familiar with Melbourne. I remember the first time I saw this thinking,"oh look, Magills was there on Elizabeth St back in the 50s and its still there now!" Sadly this is no longer true.
The narrative feels a tad sluggish by today's standards, but the premise is still fascinating and relevant. And the film is also notable for having one of the strangest come on lines in classic Hollywood history, as Gregory Peck coos to Ava Gardner "does that offer of spreading fertilizer still stand?". Um, yeah, that would make me weak at the knees.
