Review of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) by Mike V — 13 Apr 2009
Right up there with "From Russia With Love" and "Casino Royale" as the finest films in the series. Peter Hunt, arguably the most influential film editor of the last half century (he revolutionized the art of cutting on the first five Bond films), made one hell of a debut as director. And ably assisted by an editor and second unit director every bit as good (John Glen) they put together a film that never gets the credit it deserves.
The more Fleming you put into a Bond film, the better the film becomes, and tis one PROVES it. The lack of Sean Connery's star power actually allows the viewer to appreciate the story and the action more. The supporting cast is first rate, and every one of them is at the top of their game.
As for George Lazenby ... too bad he fell victim to bad advice and refused to return for Diamonds Are Forever. He had a lot of untapped potential and would, I think, have grown into the role very nicely indeed.
Bottom line ... if I had to choose only ONE "Desert Island DVD", it would be OHMSS.
Having said that, though, I'm sure glad I don't have to... ;).
