Review of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) by Simon T — 03 May 2017
Unjustly maligned entry in the 007 cycle. George Lazenby is a creditable Bond, far better than critics at the time wrote, and former editor Peter Hunt directs a lengthy script crisply. It's true that the first hour is very talky, but the later action sequences compensate.
Telly Savalas is a persuasive if unmemorable Blofeld. Only Diana Rigg lets the side down with a cold and icy supporting performance, advertising her disdain for Lazenby for all to see. It's a tribute to his talent that he is able nevertheless to elicit real emotion from the final sequence.
