Review of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) by Thomas D — 17 Aug 2010
George Lazenby was one rough, ass kicking Bond! Most people have never heard of him. Probably because he only played Bond once which is a damn shame! On Her Majesty's Secret Service was a sort of off beat addition to the ever popular 007 Saga.
Many homages to this film can be seen throughout the later Bond films, such as the opening car race along the mountainside ala, Goldeneye. The entire sequence at the Bacarat house is referenced in Goldeneye as well.
The plot was very pro and served as a very engaging and adventurous mission for 007. Bond is sent to Switzerland to investigate the true intention's of terrorist SPECTRE leader Ernst Stavro Blofeld who runs a secret base high in the Swiss Alps.
His front is to cure allergies in various different female patients by way of brainwash. His true intentions are to release a dangerous virus on the world which will unbalance the economy. a truly wicked, Dr.
Evil kind of plot. Blofeld was actually the inspiration for Dr. Evil. You can definitely tell by watching this. All of the fight sequences were great and really mean! This Bond really beats the shit out of people much like Daniel Craig's callous, more ruthless 007.
The movie had tons and tons of action, everything from ruthless brawls, to car chases to ski chases, to downhill luge chases! It was all there. True 007 action can be found here. All of the sets were great and not too overdone or cheesy.
Blofeld's high set, Alpine Compound in the Alps was sophisticated and neat with a lot of detail put into every room. Blofeld was actually very self engaging and personally went after Bond to kill him himself instead of just sending his goons after him and hiding.
He actually gets out there on ski's and luges and tries to off Bond! That's pretty hardcore. You don't really see this too much except in Dr. No or Goldeneye or any of those ones with Jaws.
Very different sides of Bond are shown here as well as he ends up falling in love with a mob bosses daughter, Tracy whom he ends up marrying at the end! Go figure, Bond ties the knot. Anyways, the whole movie was much better than I had expected.
It is right up there with the raw, original Connery Bond's and also contains the energetic edge that the newer Craig Bond movies have. It was a real pleasure to watch and I am actually sad that Lazenby only played 007 once.
He did such a good job it would have been neat to see him at least do one more. Oh well, lightning usually only strikes in the same place once. I guess my only complaint was the dreary, cold ending. Really, your going to end it like that! (dont want to spoil anything) but the ending was kind of a big let down.
Other than that though it was a really good Bond flick. 4.0 starz.
