Review of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) by Gary R — 19 Aug 2017
One of the best of the Bond series, OHMSS was the first really character-driven 007 film, pre-dating Timothy Dalton's and Daniel Craig's contributions to the franchise. We see a very "human" Bond here, not just a licensed killing machine. That's not to say there is a lack of action in this movie-quite the opposite. There are some of the best action sequences to appear in any 007 film, probably due to first time director Peter Hunt, who was second unit director on previous Bond films.
This was George Lazenby's acting debut, and he did an admirable job-not only filling some very big shoes, but taking the much beloved James Bond character to a whole new level . The irony of this movie is that it had everything Sean Connery could have possibly wanted in the role, but was previously denied to him and so he left the series, if only for 1 film.
