Review of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) by Reece L — 22 Nov 2015
Aside from an awful, cutesy opening line ("This never happened to the other guy"), On Her Majesty's Secret Service is a solid, stylishly produced, and surprisingly affecting Bond film that ejects most of the gimmickry in favor of a more down to earth tone and some excellent action sequences.
It doesn't measure up the absolute best of the series due to Lazenby's merely passable performance and its bloated length, but it mostly works, especially the utilization of some gorgeous mountain scenery and its commitment to the idea that there should be repercussions for Bond's actions, a theme that would become more prevalent in the more recent, all-around better Bond installments featuring Craig.
The finale is killer, delivering an emotional blow that most films in the series wouldn't even consider.
