Review of O'Lucky Man (2003) by City Lights B — 25 Oct 2007
I really don't know what to say about this movie. The only thing I can say is that it is truly one of the most surreal films I've ever seen, and at the same time, has a few interesting things to say about modern British society.
The second collaboration between Malcolm McDowell and Lindsay Anderson, "O Lucky Man!" unfortunately doesn't reach the level of brilliance that "If..." managed to achieve. This is for two of the following reasons: at a sprawling three hours, no matter how much you love the movie, it will have overstayed its welcome.
Even though its episodic and musical storytelling was unique, a good fraction of the film could have been cut. Also, the film seems to greatly imitate Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange," placing Mick Travis in similar situations, and hiring many of the same actors.
Still, as a whole, the film is a singular experience, and I recommend it to any cenophile.
