Review of Old Acquaintance (1943) by Mark W — 09 Oct 2010
The film starts off well but fails to deliver the goods. The film should have concentrated on the friendship/rivalry between the two ladies because it was quite compelling from the early scenes however instead it veers off in another direction and leaves that story line under-developed.
Instead we get the typical soap opera stuff...the film clearly belongs to Bette Davis, she's always watchable and brings depth to her character. Also, the costumes are a joy to see...so many beautiful hats and dresses! Any female classic film fan would enjoy that.
..ultimately, I didn't hate the film, I enjoyed it but thought it could be better. It did make me wish I was alive in the 40's, so I could go see a Bette Davis film on the big screen! It's just one of those films that takes you to another time.
*SIGH*.
