Review of Offside (2015) by Meena G — 05 Jan 2009
Fantastic low budget Iranian film, that plays like an absurdist comedy, except for the fact that the situation is entirely real. Shot documentary style during an actual Iran / Bahrain World Cup qualifier, this is a brilliant and subversive bit of political film-making, made all the more powerful by its humanity and warmth and the absence of overt messaging.
Deserves to be seen for a number of reasons, but if you're at all interested in the daily lives of a people that many in the West think we should be at war with, I strongly urge you to try and catch it.
(It's in rotation on Film Four at the time of writing.).
