Review of Of Time and the City (2008) by James-Masaki R — 27 Mar 2011
Terence Davies was born and raised in Liverpool, and although he hasn't lived there in a while or made a film, he was commisioned to make a film about the city, and in the end was a personal farewell, self reflection, happiness and disappointment, anger towards organized religion, making the most personal of all his films, and one of the finest and most original one-sided documentaries I've ever seen.
Combining newsreel footage, archive materials, and a few scattered shots of the modern age together, Davies narrates the film with amazing wit and tone. Who else could do it?
