First rate direction and performances help this film achieve what so many other adaptations of literary work fall well short of. This adaptation of one of Steinbeck's early classics is one of the most faithful renderings of any book, but perhaps it is because a novella is more likely to succeed the translation to screen than a novel as one has to sacrifice less context and detail for the former.
