Review of Oculus (2014) by Kashfia F — 10 Oct 2014
I enjoyed Oculus' departure from traditional archetypes of the horror genre: jump cuts and extreme gore. Instead, Oculus creates its spine-tingling fear by manipulating the realities of the characters in a way that seems to manipulate the reality of the viewer.
The two different stories at first become easy to identify, but as the suspense grows and the story moves along, it becomes harder to discern where one story stops and the other begins, whether the haunted mirror in Oculus is not also altering the reality of the viewer as well as those trapped in its sphere of influence.
It sets forth a very interesting question that unsettles every audience member in some way: How can we be sure what we are perceiving is reality and not some illusion set forth from a manipulator? That's what makes Oculus such an unsettling movie, because it begs the audience to question that which we cannot answer, that which we can never know for certain.
Great acting all around, and a very chilling movie for those that want to be frightened on a real human level rather than the traditional jumpy, blood and guts horror story.
