Review of Oculus (2014) by Simon R — 27 Apr 2018
I'm honestly surprised at how low the audience score is. I was expecting more of a traditional horror movie when I started Oculus, but was pleasantly surprised, and intrigued, when it developed into much more than that.
This was a disturbing psychological horror that started slow, but the last 30 or so minutes of it were some of the best I've ever seen in the horror genre. Two storylines, one from the past and one in the present, converged and intertwined in a truly terrifying way, and the slow build-up had a thrilling payoff.
It kept me on the edge of my seat. Although I originally found the ending unsatisfying, the more I thought about it, the more I decided that it was the perfectly horrifying ending that this movie needed and was building up to.
This isn't a movie I'll stop thinking about any time soon, and I may even watch it again.
