Review of Oculus (2014) by Stephanie L — 18 Oct 2014
Unlike many other horror films these days, which rely on too much ketchup and floating limbs, "Oculus" toys with perception and it does a very good job. The film is surprisingly well crafted, well acted and well paced and, especially during its first act, keeps your attention onscreen.
On the downside, those very qualities I mentioned earlier, make the movie's final act a rather disappointing one. Given its previous rhythm, I expected the film to deliver something more than some lazy moments of confusion and a rather predictable ending.
On the other hand, the writers might have had a sequel in mind, who knows?
Overall, this is good horror flick for those who are not into mindless exploitation masqueraded as intelligent horror(yes, Saw, I am looking at you) and hopefully, the franchise - if any - won't descend into silliness, as it happens in so many cases.
