Review of October Sky (1999) by Andres S — 03 Aug 2009
The Sky always shines in this adaption of Homer Hickam Jr's Novel. This has now become one of my peronal favorites after I have seen this film.
Acting - 10/10.
The acting in this film is outstanding. The entire cast is compelling in this film especially the terminally ill Mrs. Riley(played by Laura Dern) and of course Homer Hickam(played by Jake Gyllenhaal). Jake Gylenhaal star really shines in this film a probably one of his best acted if not thee best performence he has ever given. He play the country boy in a boondocks sort of town with dreams bigger than his head make the audience root for him toward the entire film. His Father(played by Chris Cooper) fulfill the role of a father pushing his on to become what he wants to be perfectly reminiscent of a real dad. The friends are not weak useless characters the all help the film flow naturally and smooth.
Story/Originality - 10/10.
The story is a nice drama and great film. It stars Homer Hickam who dreams of becoming a NASA engineer and enrolls into the science fair with his four frineds. However, it was always believed that he would join his father in the coal mining industry and become a miner. The two are constantly at odds which et the premise for several plot turns in the story and the beatuiful ending of the film. Originality is full of bliss and potency for this film is a tale of dreams I have never seen before and it truly is a film that I must keep in my archives for my children to enjoy.
Drama - 10/10.
The gut-wrenching, the heart-pounding, the eyes welling, and the jaw droppings are all symptoms of a good drama. This film has been stricken with it. The drama not only surrounds Homer within in his town among other city folk and his peer but within his family specifically with hi brother (the oldest and captian of the football team slated to play at WVU) and even more with his father who not one scene does not include tension and heartbreak between the two.
Script - 10/10.
The script is HOLLYWOOD gold! I love the script. The dialogue's between the Hickam's, the speech given by Mr. Riley on her deathbed, the meetings between Hickam and the rest of the Rocket Boys, and the events that happen in the little Virgina town. A script that will make you cr with joy, pump your fist with victory, and the cheer with adulation. This film should have been nominated for a Oscar for best screenplay.
Adaption - 10/10.
The book does not lose its magic to the big screen. The film is still a nice dream big story with all of it magic and enjoyment still intact. you will be smiling the entire time through the film that it might stick that way.
All in All, an undisputed 50/50 otherwise known as perfecto 100%. Not only a dreamer story an inspiring story that only the black hearted cann ot enjoy and one of my fave films.
