Review of Number 37 (2018) by Gcuevas344 — 20 Feb 2019
Number 37 is a film about much more than a drug-deal gone bad or a man in a wheelchair with binoculars. Borrowing the main premise from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic “Rear Window”, director Nosipho Dumisa creates an original storyline that is inherently suspenseful in every scene, beginning the film with surprisingly graphic visuals as a foreshadowing of what’s to come.
Elements of suspense and chaos are present throughout, following protagonists Randall and Pam’s attempts at saving themselves, each scheme more desperate and reckless than the one before. This film stands out among other crime thrillers, many of which resort to cliché “bad guys vs.
good guys” conflicts that almost always lead to a predictable outcome. So it is not the case however, with Number 37. Would highly recommend this film to those who can appreciate a stylistic, modern thriller about greed, corruption, and the human instinct of survival.
