Review of Now, Voyager (1942) by Lei P — 16 Mar 2008
Bette Davis plays a smothered aging daughter under the tight reigns of a autocratic mother. She is sent away after experiencing an emotional breakdown, then finds her autonomy and love with a married man (who is married to an autocratic wife), and returns home a new woman.
Great movie. For a 1940s-era movie, portrayed the psychological impacts of being parented by mothers with Borderline Personality Disorder, in both the lighter tone Davis took on as "the good daughter" and the darker tone that her lover's young 12-year-old daughter takes on as "the bad daughter.".
