Review of Now, Voyager (1942) by Michael L — 07 Dec 2010
"Oh Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars.".
Now, Voyager is a fantastic romantic melodrama. It starts a little slow but after the first 15 minutes or so it gets better from there in. Bette Davis is at her best as the extremely repressed daughter of Gladys Cooper's domineering mother, who is having a nervous breakdown. Bette Davis naturally transforms from being the ugly duckling of the family (her first scenes she has no makeup, bushy eyebrows, and wears shapeless dresses; needless to say they made her look really ugly) into a beautiful, confident woman who is madly in love with a man she met on a cruise. Besides the acting, the writing and direction are also excellent. Max Steiner's romantic score was also worthy of it's Oscar win. This is one of those movies that Warner Bros. were known for making every single year, in fact they made two great romances in 1942, the other being Casablanca. This is a great film. Highly recommended. 10/10.
