Review of Notes on a Scandal (2006) by Joel M — 01 Oct 2008
Obsessed much? Note that question down! Because that is the focal teacherous, I mean treacherous subject matter of "Notes on a Scandal". Judi Dench stars as Barbara Covett, she is the lonely-lesbian geriatric teacher who covets and is coveted to obsess on attractive female colleagues.
Her latest victim is new art teacher Sheba Hart played by Cate Blanchett. Let's just say that Barbara want to have more than a "Hart-to-Hart" conversation with Sheba. The married Hart does make a disheartening mistake by sleeping with a one of her students.
Barbara observes this act of Sex Education taken too literally, and decides to use it as a manipulative ploy to capture the heart of adulteress Sheba Hart. I think the madcap Barbara probably has had too many "Chivas" throughout her lifetime to get into this irrepressible state.
Dench & Blanchett get passing grades for their extravagant work. Screenplayer Patrick Marber does a "Marberous" job in formulating the film's witty & juicy dialogue. Director Richard Eyre architects the film's climacteric scenes with an poignant punch that you can't take your eyes off.
"Notes on a Scandal" is definitely a noteworthy film! **** Good.
