Review of Not Without My Daughter (1991) by Sherry L — 30 Aug 2008
Never mind what the critics say about this movie. Some critics tend to try to be politicly correct and sometimes reject movies just cause they are afraid of upsetting.
But still, I can´t agree that this movie is controversial.
Why should it be controversial when a country are making a movie about all the bad things about another country? It happens all the time! Please, don´t be so sensitive! There are good and bad thing about most things in life. Countries as well.
This movie is a real story about an american woman Betty and her daughter who gets trapped in Iran by the husband/father Moody, who is from Iran. First it was only supposed to be a short visit to let Moody´s family see their lovely four year old daughter Mahtob, but Moody then decides that they should stay in Iran forever and live with his sister (who dislikes Betty alot). Betty gets devestated of course and soon discover that while she is in Iran she doesn´t have any more right as a woman then any other iranian woman, cause she is married to an iranier. The embassy cannot help her unless she would give her daughter up, cause their daughter belongs to her father by iranian law, and if the father would die she would belong to any of the fathers relatives.
Moody gets abusive and swears that he is gonna kill Betty if she tries to escape, or in any way humiliate him.
Betty soon realises that she has to risk both her own and her daughter Mahtob´s life to get out of Iran.
Very scary story that captures. Good acting as well. Very watchworthy.
