Review of Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) by Ray H — 15 Jul 2013
I wanted to see this remake of the 1922 film. The Dracula in this version was ugly and repulsive. Its a much different take on the story. More recent films have presented Dracula as a suave, seductive sort.
The story was bare bones. The production values were crude looking. The sets were very, very, modest. Dracula as a flying bat was very crude. It looked like the movie was made in the 1920s. The director, Herzog, might have done this on purpose. Apparently, he thought very highly of the original silent film.
Dracula did not appear to grow fangs when he needed them. And, his fangs were not the canine cuspids we are accustomed to seeing. Instead they are the central two incisor teeth. They are permanently long. So, Dracula looks a little like a large, evil, rabbit. Its not a good, nor scary look.
I found the film to be disappointing. Maybe it was made for film purists. The kind of people who like seeing old production values for their own obscure sake.
