Review of Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) by Camden N — 20 Jun 2008
Having read the book many times, I don't believe a definitive Dracula has been made, but for now this one is my favorite. It's not the most faithful adaptation but I love its atmosphere, and the score by Popol Vuh is extremely creepy.
Kinski makes for a great Dracula. In an interesting interpretation he plays the Count as an impotent, self-conscious, almost pathetic figure. I love how when he passes by a crucifix while unloading his coffins he pauses a moment to cower at it and then gets back to business.
It's the film's sense of dread combined with its sense of humor that makes it so enjoyable, and Herzog's direction is nothing short of dazzling. I know many prefer the original Nosferatu but I can't help but love this interesting and complex remake more.
