Review of Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) by Nathan M — 28 Nov 2010
This retelling of the classic tale manages to be more engaging than the original, yet still well short of classic status. The film does have some epic visuals, an occasionally great score, and does at moments carry a documentary style that makes it seem flavorful.
Even the female lead, Lucy is slightly more competent than the women in other Dracula adaptations. However, the film is not convincingly period due to some missed details regarding the sets and has a very 1970s Germany TV movie look to it, most likely due to color palette and few custom sets.
The character of Renfield still bothers me due to his consistently cartoonish portrayals. Overall, Klaus Kinski is far less hideous than Max Schreck, making the whole specter of plague seem less threatening, despite people dying left and right and more live rats in a film than I have ever seen.
